Hello All! I am safely back home after my holiday in Paris. It’s great to be home, but as always, re-entry can be difficult and I believe I’m a little bit homesick for Paris. Undoubtedly I will return to Paris again and again, but right now it’s time for other adventures, both ordinary and exceptional. Here’s what’s going on right now.
Recovering from jetlag. I usually have much less trouble traveling west compared to traveling east, but this time I’ve been slow to get back into my routines. This is probably due in part to having picked up a head cold the last day or so in Paris; apparently trans-Atlantic flights are not really recommended as a cure for head colds.
Catching up with yard work. It finally feels like fall here today, with rain storms last night clearing out the heat and humidity. Today I mowed the lawn and dealt with my old nemesis, weeds, and started making fall gardening plans which includes cleaning up the flower beds, dividing the iris, and planting bulbs.
Reading The Boys in the Boat by Daniel Brown about the team of rowers who competed in the 1936 Olympics, which I finished on the plane home. If you haven’t read it yet, put it at the top of your list now – it’s excellent. It reminds me of Lauren Hillenbrand’s Seabiscuit (one of my favorite books) not just for the time period depicted (the Great Depression), but for the stories of courage, scrappiness, teamwork and sacrifice. Very evocative of a different era, very hard to put down. Now I’m reading Circling the Sun by Paula McLain which is a fictionalization of the life of Beryl Markham. Beautifully written and poignant.
Learning lettering techniques with an online class from Big Picture Classes. I’m behind a couple of weeks (it’s learn at your own pace so I’m not missing any lessons) because of the trip but I am loving it. The first part was on brush lettering and I’ve learned so much! I still have a lot of practicing to do, but I’m having loads of fun. The next lessons will focus on chalk lettering – can’t wait.
Making progress on my Project Life album which I have yet again changed up. I’ve moved to a smaller album (6×8), the idea being that it is easier and quicker to work with. I love working with the paper and the products, and I love learning and using digital skills with my photos, but I am not using Project Life as a week-by-week record. I’m more interested in capturing highlights and recording happy memories. I plan to write more in-depth stories using Ali Edward’s Story Kits (which I’m very far behind on but love). I think/hope that I’ve come up with a formula for putting together my album which will keep it fun and get it finished. I’ll keep you posted.
Knitting on Ivar, a relaxed, long cardigan from Brooklyn Tweed. It’s finally cool enough to turn a knitters thoughts to wool and it feels great to have yarn and needles in my hands again.
Watching Doctor Who! I’m very excited that the new season begins tonight. Daleks! The TARDIS! Cybermen! The Impossible Girl! Endless fun.
And I still have several stories from Paris to finish up – watch for them over the next several days!
